| Ombudsman
Program
The American Red Cross of the
Mohawk Valley in partnership with the Office for the
Aging, has established the Ombudsman Program for Herkimer
and Oneida Counties.
A volunteer Ombudsman has to successfully complete thirty-six
hours of classroom and field work. After completion
of the course, Ombudsmen use their time in long term
care facilities getting to know residents, staff, and
administration. By getting to know the people involved,
it is easier for the Ombudsman to recognize and deal
with potential problems.
This Red Cross advocacy program is about assuring the
highest quality of care for residents of long term care
facilities. An ombudsman is a highly trained and certified
volunteer who acts as a liaison between residents and
staff of nursing homes.
Ombudsman
volunteers perform their work by:
• Mediating conflicts between residents, their
families and staff to solve problems
• Investigating complaints and making appropriate
referrals
• Monitoring facilities to insure that all state
and federal laws are being followed
• Educating residents, family members and staff
about resident's rights and available resources
“Serving as an Ombudsman can be a
very rewarding and valuable experience.” said
Jeff Parker, Elder Services Coordinator. “The
residents of long term care facilities frequently are
unable to speak up for themselves and don’t always
have anyone available to speak on their behalf. The
Ombudsman fills this very critical role”
Anyone
interested in signing up for the training or with further
questions can contact Jeff Parker at 733-4666 ext. 205.
